This is my video analysis for "A Quiet Place"
The big idea of the clip was that the characters had to stay silent in order to survive. During the first clip, all that the audience could hear was the wind and leaves rustling (diegetic sound), which connotes barrenness, loneliness, and how there was no other sound other than it. It also shows the close up of a fallen traffic light with desaturated coloured grass, this implies that nobody has been taking care of the area, therefore the yellow color on the grass and the rusty traffic light. A big event must've happened, causing people to go missing (seen from the missing person posters), this makes the audience wonder what happened. This big idea was also connoted during the scene in the drug store that was very messy and dirty, most of the supplies there were gone or expired already, this implies how the area has been left alone for a very long time and how this family only has each other as there are nobody else around. This makes the audience empathise with this family, feeling pity for them, as they could also see the sick brother laying on the floor. The lighting was very dark (connotes creepiness), the camera pans up to reveal a close up of a rack full of orange medicine bottles, where a woman seems to very carefully pick up one of the medicines, as if she didn't want to topple the other bottles, which would produce a rather loud noise. In addition, during the scene where the camera pans up to a low angle the little boy that's tip-toeing on a broken chair attempting to grab the toy rocket where he accidently knocks it over, the low angle emphasizes on how tall the toy is located, so if it falls, it will definitely make a loud noise, moreover it also shows how the little boy is struggling to reach the toy as he is short. When he knocked the toy, the girl immediately and hurriedly went out of her way to catch it, preventing it from falling onto the ground, she even threw her body onto the ground, meaning that she was willing to get hurt in order to prevent the toy from making a noise. The girl looked very relieved that the toy didn't fall, connoting that she didn't want the toy to make a noise. To add to it, throughout the clips, the characters hasn't spoken a single word but used sign language instead, which connotes that they couldn't talk, perhaps hiding from something or someone. Moreover, there was a scene where the camera tracks the child in a cowboy shot, bringing focus onto him and creating suspense and builds up curiosity within the audience, wanting to know what's wrong with the little boy, which was also aided by the shocked and anxious expressions on the other character's faces. The camera then shows a close up and slight zoom of the previous toy rocket that the child had gotten, the man (who seems to be the father of the child) took the plane from the child carefully but also concerningly and immediately took out the batteries from the toy, which then he signs "too loud" and then the camera uses a close up to truck the man's hand where he places the toy on the counter next to him, again, doing it very cautiously. Combining these small details, we could come to the conclusion that these characters are preventing themselves from making any noises.
- I'm not sure how the lack of rain supports your big idea. Stick with your point about people not taking care of the area.
ReplyDelete- What camera shots/movements are used during the scene where the toy falls off the shelf. What meaning does this create?
- These are good points, but you lack terminology. Be careful not to just describe what is happening in the story. You need to discuss the technical elements and how they create meaning.
